Disability Standards training mandated for school leaders
Leaders will be required to undertake online learning about their legal obligations as part of our department-wide commitment to improve outcomes for students with disability.
Staff who are substantive, relieving or acting in the roles of Director, Educational Leadership, Principal, Deputy Principal, Assistant Principal and Head Teacher are required to complete the Disability Standards for Education (Education Leaders) online learning by 31 January 2021.
Mandating this training was a recommendation of the Parliamentary Inquiry into education of students with a disability or special needs in New South Wales schools.
Disability Strategy Implementation Relieving Director Lisa Whittaker highlighted the training as an important way of ensuring staff understand their obligations under the Disability Standards for Education (2005) and the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
“We know that the number of students with disability and additional learning needs in our system is growing, and that their needs are becoming more complex,” Ms Whittaker said.
“All students should be engaged and challenged by high quality learning opportunities supported by reasonable adjustments that allow them to achieve to their fullest.”
Seven modules of the training are available within MyPL tailored to specific roles and school settings.
The Disability Strategy Implementation team encourages all staff to consider completing the training that will support them best in their role.
