National Skills Week celebrates vocational education and training as a rewarding and successful career option contributing to Australia’s strong and vibrant economy.
Holroyd High School student Sophie Lam’s creative spirit and passion for animation and illustration has seen her become the first school-based trainee in the ABC News graphic design team.
In her Design Fundamentals school-based traineeship (SBAT), Sophie is perfecting her Photoshop and Illustrator skills. She shadows team members on projects and learns about the invisible meanings behind fonts, words and colours.
“Being able to work and learn from the ABC News graphics team has been a huge opportunity for me that I’m fortunate to be able to do,” Sophie said.
“It gives me confidence and I hope to pursue the path I want to do. I’m very grateful to be here!”
Sophie has worked on various graphic designs in the past six months, including logos, posters and news-related animations.
ABC News graphic design lead, Meredith Cate, said it was a thrill to host a school-based trainee.
“It opens up opportunities for us to connect with the next generation of designers,” she said.
“Not only is our team keen to share their knowledge and expertise, but as technologies and platforms change, we’re always looking for fresh perspectives on new media design.
“Sophie is already a talented illustrator and animator and we’re sure she’ll achieve great things while studying with us over the next two years.”
SBAT engagement officer for the Educational Pathways Program, Adriano Doong, has a passion for placing talented students in niche vocational studies.
“By completing her traineeship while still in school, Sophie is already years in advance of peers. It puts her in a commanding position to be sought after by employers,” Adriano said.
“I come across exceptionally talented students that can start their chosen careers as part of their HSC.
“Without employers such as the ABC, students wouldn’t have an advantage post school to pursue their passions.”
Sophie said the experience had cemented her decision to pursue graphic design as a career.
“The whole experience has been amazing and will look very valuable on my resume. I hope to go to university to further training,” she said.
