S.T.A.R.S. in schools: Supporting students from refugee backgrounds

Description
S.T.A.R.S. in Schools: Supporting students from refugee backgrounds raises awareness about students from refugee backgrounds and their experiences to help schools create environments which support student recovery and their successful resettlement. The course promotes effective teaching and learning strategies to assist staff respond in trauma-aware ways to behavioural issues that may arise for students from refugee backgrounds. The course encourages a whole school approach as well as classroom practices that promote positive behaviour and engage students in learning.
S.T.A.R.S. is appropriate for teachers, school executive and learning and support staff in both primary and secondary schools. Non teaching staff, for example Community Liaison Officers and School Administrative and Support Staff will also benefit from completing this course. Based on the framework of Safety, Trust, Awareness, Responsibility and Skills, S.T.A.R.S. provides background information, tools for reflection and planning, practical ideas, strategies and resources. Participants explore the resources and share knowledge and understanding to develop effective interventions that support students' wellbeing, recovery and safety by addressing school and system requirements.
Module 1: group discussions and reflection on videos and how this may relate to participants’ own students.
Module 2: analysis of recovery goals and a jigsaw reading activity about 'The Three pillars of Informed Care.'
Module 3: reflection on school practice using the Refugee student readiness survey in relation to participants’ school context.
Module 4: introduction to the Window of Tolerance with various activities allowing participants to apply their knowledge to case studies.
After completing the course participants get access to a website with resources and support materials.
