About CESE

The Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE) stands at the forefront of advancing excellence in evidence, insights and policy to support data-driven decision making, so every student learns, grows and belongs in an equitable and outstanding education system.

As Australia's first hub for education data and evaluation across early childhood, schooling, training and higher education, CESE is dedicated to identifying what works best, to ultimately make a difference for all learners.

Key responsibilities of CESE within the NSW Department of Education include:

  • administering the Chief Data Office function, ensuring clear and effective data governance, improving data quality and driving capability uplift
  • implementing comprehensive data and research strategies to elevate student outcomes
  • elevating the adoption of evidence-based practices through the provision of qualitative and quantitative research, encompassing data analysis, evidence papers and case studies
  • ensuring the delivery of robust data collection mechanisms to facilitate research and statistics for the education and training sectors
  • crafting a clear and cohesive policy agenda
  • embedding a data release operating model to streamline information dissemination
  • developing strategic policy insights and championing policy excellence to shape a high-quality, equitable and future-focused education system
  • engaging nationally on education research and data strategy issues
  • trialling innovative initiatives aimed at improving student outcomes.
