Teaching strategies
Teaching strategies is a research-based measure from the Tell Them From Me surveys. It is a source of evidence linked to What works best and the School Excellence Framework.
What is it?
Teaching strategies are the various method educators use in their teaching practice and cover a wide range of techniques. Effective teaching strategies include preplanning, outlining learning goals and criteria for success, and consistently providing feedback.
The Tell Them From Me surveys ask teachers about the practices that they employ to communicate to students the learning intentions and success criteria of a lesson, and which provide feedback to students in order to help them to improve. The results are reported as teachers' average score for teaching strategies.
Why is it important?
Teachers should clearly communicate the intentions of a lesson as well as the criteria for successful learning in order to make learning explicit for students. Feedback also has a powerful influence on enhancing achievement, particularly when it is clearly stated, has purpose and meaning, and builds upon and provides logical connections to a student's prior knowledge.
