Access to co-educational schools
The NSW Government has made a commitment that every student in NSW will have guaranteed access to a co-educational public high school by 2027.
Many more families will be able to enrol their children in a co-educational public high school from 2025, with all students in NSW guaranteed access by 2027.
In adjusting intake areas, we are considering factors including enrolment trends; public transport access; size and utilisation rate of co-educational high schools; the number of students living in each proposed intake area; the proportion of students who historically enrol in either single sex or co-educational schools; and the capacity of co-educational schools to enrol students.
Families living in single-sex high school intake areas will still be guaranteed a place at their designated single-sex school.
Consultation feedback
The consultation period for the department’s draft co-educational high school intake area adjustments opened Friday 13 October 2023 and closed Sunday 19 November 2023.
Feedback was open to parents, staff, students and community members from over 120 schools, including the following single-sex high schools, their partner primary schools and nearby co-educational high schools:

- Beverly Hills Girls High School
- Burwood Girls High School
- Birrong Boys High School
- Birrong Girls High School
- Canterbury Boys High School

- Homebush Boys High School
- James Cook Boys High School
- Moorefield Girls High School
- Punchbowl Boys High School
- Strathfield Girls High School
- Wiley Park Girls High School
Feedback was provided by a total of 401 respondents consisting of:
- 300 parents and carers of students at primary schools and/or single-sex high schools and/or co-educational high schools
- 75 staff members
- 14 students
- 12 local community members.
Overall parents, students and local community member respondents’ views of the proposed intake area adjustments is:
- 40.2% positive
- 24% mixed or neutral
- 35.8% negative
The department thanks all who provided feedback. Following consideration of the feedback received and our discussions with stakeholders including Transport for NSW and school leadership, we have now finalised the co-educational high school intake areas. School Finder will be updated with the final intake areas in Term 1, 2024, you can also view the finalised intake areas below.
In answer to some frequently asked questions:
- Out-of-area enrolment will be considered in line with the Department’s current policy. Recent changes to school boundaries and factors such as siblings are taken into account for out-of-area enrolment applications.
- Families living in single-sex high school intake areas will still be guaranteed a place at their designated single-sex school.

As part of the NSW Government commitment for all students in NSW to have guaranteed access to co-educational schooling, the department has adjusted 20 identified co-educational high school intake areas.
