Students in the Blacktown area will be guaranteed a place in a co-educational high school from next year as part of the Minns Labor Government’s commitment to provide all families with a co-education option from 2027.
Intake areas for nearby co-ed high schools will be adjusted to include students living in the current catchment for Blacktown Boys and Blacktown Girls High Schools.
Currently, families in the Blacktown catchment to not have guaranteed access to a co-educational high school.
The Minns Labor Government made an election commitment to guarantee access to co-education for all NSW students by 2027, and has announced a number of changes following consultations with local school communities and parents of future students.
The Department of Education recently held extensive consultation with the Blacktown school community, to understand its preference for school settings.
The consultation found a preference for Blacktown Boys and Girls High Schools to remain as single-sex schools, with intake areas of nearby schools adjusted to guarantee co-educational access.
The new intake areas will be determined considering demographic data, enrolment trends and transport options. Families will be informed of the updated intake areas in March.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car said:
“The Minns Labor Government promised to consult with each community on access to co-education, and this is another step towards delivering access for all families in NSW.
“Hundreds of students in Blacktown will now have guaranteed access to co-education for the first time, providing certainty for families.
“We’d like to thank the community for their involvement in the consultation process.”
