New public primary school and preschool for Thurgoona

The NSW Government will purchase land on Kerr Road in Wirlinga to build a new school and preschool.

The NSW Government has announced the site for the new public primary school and preschool for Thurgoona, which will ensure families in this growing Albury community have the world-class education facilities they deserve.

An agreement has been made for the NSW Government to purchase land on Kerr Road in Wirlinga, with the new school and preschool being planned and delivered to accommodate future enrolments from 2027.

The former government failed to deliver the new school during its 12 years in government, only promising a school on the eve of an election, with no work having been undertaken.

Planning for the school is being done in line with the Thurgoona-Wirlinga Precinct Structure Plan and will take into account significant future population growth and expanding infrastructure.

The public preschool will be co-located with the primary school, as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to deliver 100 public preschools across NSW.

Community members can learn more about the project at a drop-in information session at Thurgoona Public School Hall on Tuesday 25 March from 3.30-7pm.

The NSW Department of Education is working closely with Albury City Council and the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI), and the community will be updated as planning continues.

As part of the NSW Government's plan to rebuild public education, the 2024-25 Budget is delivering $8.9 billion for new and upgraded schools, including $1.4 billion for schools in regional NSW.

This targeted investment will ensure growing communities get access to a world class public education.

NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car said:

“The Minns Labor Government is excited to announce the site for the new local primary school and co-located public preschool for Albury’s growing Thurgoona area.

“This school will offer state-of-the-art classrooms and facilities designed to support students in their crucial early years of learning, serving a community undergoing significant growth and change.

“Unfortunately, the former Liberal National Government let down families in Albury, having failed to deliver a new school for the growing Thurgoona community during its 12 years in office.

“After years of inaction by the Liberal National Government, the Minns Labor Government is delivering this project that Albury families deserve.

“This is an important step forward in meeting the long-term educational needs of this growing community, and I look forward to seeing this project come to life.”
