Mick Lee has a simple explanation for why he’s passionate about providing quality career advice to high school students.

“I didn’t always make the best career decisions myself and I wanted to help young people achieve their career goals and aspirations,” the Head Teacher Careers said.

“I followed the traditional advice, which in the 80s was ‘get a trade’ so I did - but looking back I probably shouldn’t have.”

It may have taken a while, but Mr Lee did start his perfect career in 2000; becoming a careers adviser at Maitland High School.

Twenty-five years later, he has been recognised for his ongoing contribution to the Careers Advisers Association of NSW & ACT Inc. by the Professional Teachers’ Council NSW with an Outstanding Professional Service Award.

“Mr Lee has been an integral volunteer in his local Careers Adviser Network, Maitland District Careers Advisers Association, for decades with his support and commitment invaluable to his network peers,” the Executive Committee said.

Currently based at Hunter River High School in Heatherbrae, Mr Lee leads the Newcastle North Educational Pathways Program which provides innovative careers education for several schools in the area.

One of his goals for 2025 is to deliver workshops to help parents and carers provide the guidance and support for their children as they navigate subject selection and weigh up career goals.

“Family members are an important sounding board in this area, but it can be a tricky negotiation,” Mr Lee said.

“The best advice for students is to research, ask questions, take into account what you want to do, your passion, goals and aspirations – but also learn about the workforce.”

Mr Lee will be presented with his award at a presentation dinner at Sydney Olympic Park on 26 February.
