Teale Kelly-Wright knows how to sing out for the Schools Spectacular, but Cyclone Alfred has him singing out for his town.
As floodwaters rose on the evening of Thursday, March 6, The Bellingen High School Year 8 student wanted to keep his community informed of State Emergency Service (SES) warnings.
Teale and his father, Anthony, collected equipment from community radio station 2BBB, where the 14-year-old presents a weekly good news show about teen culture and activities.
From a hastily assembled bedroom studio on Friday morning, he was helping the 2BBB team collate and broadcast emergency information and warnings.
“The bridge was nearly flooded last night but we were able to get the last pieces of equipment,” Teale said.
Like other North Coast young people, he’s no stranger to floods and knows how important it is for residents to stay tuned for alerts and information.
“If power goes out you always have radio,” the young broadcaster and musician said.
“Radio will always be there, even if times are tough. I want to make sure everyone in my community is safe.

His efforts caught the ear of another broadcaster, with ABC Radio Sydney speaking to him live on Friday morning.
Teale wants everyone to “make sure to tune in to stay safe and involved and know what is going on in the community”.
When this emergency has passed, he will refocus on preparing for a second bid at the Schools Spectacular, after last year performing songs including ‘Somewhere Out There’ and ‘Fly Away’.
He wants a career in music and journalism. In the meantime, you can catch Teale on 2BBB each Saturday from noon to 1pm.
His principal, Michelle Elliott, described Teale as “an amazing young person with a strong voice for Bellingen”.
"Teale is an insightful and passionate young person who captures the world with a unique perspective.
“Initiative is the word that comes to mind when I think of Teale – he helps wherever possible, whether it's at our school café, Bello Buddies, or any opportunity to support others.
“An exceptional musician, he is deeply committed to ensuring the voices of local and Australian artists continue to thrive through his own radio show on 2BBB.
“Teale’s warm and engaging personality makes it impossible not to be captivated by his thoughts and vision for the future.
“We are incredibly proud of him.”
