Canterbury Boys High School community consultation

The department consulted with the Canterbury community in Term 4 2024 to better understand the factors that influence high school selection for families.

Data assessments regularly review trends and support proactive planning and resourcing for our schools.

Departmental analysis has shown a significant number of students eligible to attend Canterbury Boys High School are opting for out-of-area enrolments at other high schools. This is a trend the department would like to understand and address.

Community consultation provided an opportunity for parents, carers, current and future students, school staff and special interest groups to share their feedback on high school options in the Canterbury area.

Consultation involved a detailed online survey.

The feedback received will help us understand the factors that influence high school enrolment decisions and identify any opportunities for improvement at Canterbury Boys High School.

Consultation took place from 28 October to 11 November 2024.

Next steps

The department is currently reviewing all feedback received over the 2-week consultation period.

A report outlining the consultation findings will then be prepared and an update provided to the Canterbury community.

What is the NSW Government’s commitment regarding co-educational public high schools?

The NSW Government is committed to providing all families with access to a co-educational public high school option by 2027.

Several factors were considered to support delivering this commitment, including enrolment data assessments and a review of intake areas in suburbs where students previously had access to only a single-sex public high school.

How were the intake area adjustments decided?

Intake area adjustments are based on a comprehensive review of enrolment data and current school offerings in various suburbs.

This review assessed what changes could be made to intake areas as an initial step in delivering the government’s commitment to access to co-educational schools.

More information can be found by visiting the Access to co-educational schools webpage.

How can I see the new intake areas?

School Finder can be used to explore designated intake and catchment areas and locate a public school.

Will Canterbury Boys and Canterbury Girls high schools become co-educational to meet the commitment?

The intake area adjustments for the Canterbury school cluster mean that the government's commitment to provide a co-educational school offering for local families has been met and Canterbury Boys and Canterbury Girls high schools will remain as single-sex schools.
