Find out the requirements to become a teacher in these specialist teaching areas in NSW public schools.

Requirements to become a qualified teacher librarian in NSW public schools include:

  1. be an approved primary or secondary teacher with the NSW Department of Education
  2. complete an approved postgraduate program at master’s degree level in teacher librarianship.

The following is an approved postgraduate program*:

  • Charles Sturt University - Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship)

* New programs delivered by other universities may be available.

Requirements to become a qualified careers adviser in NSW public schools include:

  1. be an approved secondary teacher with the NSW Department of Education
  2. complete an approved postgraduate program designed to prepare teachers for employment as a careers adviser.

The following providers offer approved postgraduate programs in careers education*:

  • Australian Catholic University
  • Edith Cowan University
  • CEAV Institute
  • James Cook University
  • Queensland University of Technology
  • Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT)
  • University of South Australia
  • University of Southern Queensland

Requirements to become a qualified EAL/D teacher in NSW public schools include:

  1. be an approved primary or secondary teacher with the NSW Department of Education
  2. complete an approved course in EAL/D or TESOL focusing on school-based curriculum which includes a practicum in a school setting for years K - 12.
