Growing up, cricket had a massive impact on my life. Me and my dad used to come down to Hallowell and watch the older boys play cricket. It's really helped me build resilience and determination and I think the biggest thing is mental toughness, which has really helped me in my journey throughout life so far. When I realized how flexible teaching as a career can be, I thought teaching would be a great fit for me.

The fact that I can have an impact on students every day in my classroom, I can also keep working towards my sporting goals and I get to be a role model for young people. It makes me feel really confident that I've chosen the right career and the school I'm working out at the moment is really supportive of my cricket commitments.

If I need to take time off to go around Australia, I can. If I need to go play in a state or if I get called up last minute to play to representative level, I'm able to do it. I love that I have a job that is working towards my long term career, but I can still focus on my cricket, which is really important to me.

I work part time at the moment during my busy season, during times where I might be battling an injury. I'm able to pick up extra work. I've also worked part time in the department's corporate offices looking at Aboriginal initiatives within the community, so it's nice to know that there are career opportunities both in the classroom and out of the classroom.

Teaching has opened up so many opportunities for me as an early career teacher and I'm so excited to see what's next.
