The need to transport caged birds should be very minimal however in the case of birds needing veterinary attention or being relocated during school holidays, it is important to be aware of the appropriate way to transport them.

Birds are easily stressed in situations like transportation. The carrier used for transport should be sturdy and enclosed to keep light to a minimum. If a cage is used it should be covered using a towel or sheet. Allergens, sunlight, car lights, extreme temperatures, and being subjected to visual observation by people or other animals could potentially stress a bird during transport. The carrier should have a solid bottom, with no grid or holes that can lead to injury. The carrier must always be kept level and restrained to avoid tipping and moving and should be lined with a towel or thick newspaper.

Every effort should be made to reduce the time taken for transportation. Birds are very vulnerable to heat stress and the temperature can quickly rise to harmful levels in a vehicle.
