Purpose

This course is divided into two modules (each module must be completed in order to successfully finish the course):

Module 1

• Explanation of NESA requirements and overview of the visual arts outcomes in the context of the syllabus.
• The artmaking practices (the ‘physical tools’) of line, shape and form, value, space and perspective, colour and texture are explored.
• These ‘physical tools’ within the artmaking practices are then combined with the representational qualities (the ‘mind tools’) including rhythm and movement, harmony and balance, emphasis, proportion, graduation, signs, symbols, codes and conventions.

Mid-course task – you are required to:

• prepare and teach one visual arts lesson to a K–6 class (of a minimum of 20 minutes) relating to at least one artmaking practice learnt during Part 1
• submit via email an overview of the lesson and receive feedback prior to teaching it.

Module 2

• The forms, qualities and processes as are detailed in the syllabus. You will engage in pedagogical approaches to using these forms including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and 3D, texture, fibre, photography and digital forms.
  • Practical examples of the artmaking practices in the context of the learning experiences, forms, qualities and processes.

Course content

Completing this course will help you to:

• engage in professional learning in visual arts as an artform within the NSW Creative Arts K–6 Syllabus (2006)
• build capacity and confidence as well as instigating change in attitudes and abilities in the creative arts (visual arts) K–6.

Artmaking practices such as line, texture and space are combined with practical tools in the learning experiences and artistic forms described within the syllabus. You will participate in two-part online modules to unpack the syllabus and learn how to enable these expectations in their classrooms.

At the conclusion of part 1, you will:

• plan, deliver and receive feedback on a targeted visual arts lesson that you will teach to your class
• be required to answer multiple-choice style assessment questions throughout, in order to progress through the course.
