Active travel means walking, cycling, scootering, skateboarding or any similar transport where human energy is spent to travel.

Active travel can have considerable health, social and environmental benefits for students, parents and the community, including:

  • increased physical activity in day-to-day life
  • reduced traffic congestion
  • improved student concentration and alertness
  • reduced noise pollution
  • increased time to socialise and talk to our family members and friends.

Road Safety Education: Safe Active Travel - this professional learning supports school leaders and teachers to embed safe active travel initiatives into their school routines.

Since its inception, 47 school leaders/teachers from 36 schools have participated in the professional learning and engaged the support of a Road Safety Education Officer - to plan and develop school specific, safe active travel initiatives.

Initiatives have included:

  • regular active travel to school days
  • safe route to school information developed and shared with families
  • safe active travel opportunities during excursions
  • safe active travel initiatives incorporated in school wellbeing programs
  • collaborating with local councils on joint active transport initiatives
  • breakfast clubs supporting safe active travel to school
  • road safety teaching and learning programs developed
  • encouraging bus pass applications
  • procuring bike and scooter storage.
