The HPGE professional learning framework
The HPGE professional learning framework comprises tiers of increasing depth. Courses are progressively released – with Tier 1 and some Tier 2 courses currently available.
HPGE Tier 1 professional learning
Tier 1 assists schools to understand and plan for implementation of the High Potential and Gifted Education policy through a range of differentiated and flexible options.
These 30-minute, elective, self-paced courses unpack one key concept or principle in the High Potential and Gifted Education policy. They provide reading, stimulus material and discussion questions and can be completed by individuals, teams, or networks. There are six canapés and most include canapé chat videos where high potential and gifted education specialists discuss key ideas.

Access to these canapé courses is through MyPL page (staff only).
This online 2.5 hour course is delivered by HPGE facilitators. It provides an overview and orientation to the High Potential and Gifted Education policy:
- key concepts
- guiding principles
- policy development
- effective strategies
Participants reflect on current practices regarding High Potential and Gifted Education policy implementation. This course is suitable for teachers as an introduction to the policy.
This 10-hour lead level accredited course is designed for those leading implementation of the HPGE policy in their school. As part of the course, participants conduct the Attitudes and Practices Survey (ATPS) with staff. The HPGE Evaluation and Planning Tool (EP Tool) is used to guide school planning.
The leaders course is delivered in a range of modes:
- face to face over 2 non–consecutive days
- online live over 2 non–consecutive days
- blended – self-paced and online live over 4 sessions
The course includes mid and post course deliverables.
Teachers with no prior knowledge are encouraged to complete the HPGE 5 – hour teachers self–paced course before enrolling in the leaders course. Teachers with current knowledge in HPGE are encouraged to complete the Tier 1 entrée course or canape courses (information in the show hides above)

HPGE Tier 2 professional learning
The Tier 2 policy into practice self-paced, online series assists schools to implement core High Potential and Gifted Education policy points.
Course 1 is aligned with the High Potential and Gifted policy key action: assess and identify. Modules assist educators to recognise high potential and gifted students in the 4 domains:
- Module 1: Finding high potential in the 4 domains
- Module 2: Leading and supporting teachers
- Module 3: Finding high potential in the intellectual domain
- Module 4: Finding high potential in the creative domain
- Module 5: Finding high potential in the social-emotional domain
- Module 6: Finding high potential in the physical domain
- Module 7: Finding unrecognised high potential

Course 2 is aligned with the High Potential Gifted Education policy key action: implement. This course assists educators to create a talent development plan in response to the learning and wellbeing needs of high potential and gifted students.
