The HSC Course Selection by NAPLAN 9 Band Category Report allows a school to view whether a student’s performance in Stage 5 affects their choices for Stage 6.

What does the HSC Course Selection by NAPLAN 9 Band Category report provide?

This one page report presents information on:

Number of Students in each HSC Course by NAPLAN 9 Band Category

• This stacked column chart shows the number and proportion of students selecting each HSC course within a KLA.
• There are 3 stacked columns, one for each NAPLAN 9 band category – Bottom 2, Middle 2 and Top 2. The NAPLAN band categories are for the same cohort of students.
• The HSC Year slicer shows the year the students completed the HSC. E.g. if 2017 is selected, the students completed the HSC in 2017. They are grouped into the NAPLAN 9 categories they achieved in for NAPLAN 9, i.e. their 2014 NAPLAN results.
• Use the NAPLAN 9 Domain slicer to select a different domain. This may be more meaningful when comparing NAPLAN performance to HSC course choice, for example select NAPLAN 9 Numeracy to compare to Mathematics or Science course choices.  Do not select multiple NAPLAN 9 domains as the student numbers will be doubled.

How can I use the HSC Course Selection by NAPLAN 9 Band Category report to support my school self-assessment?

Analyse the difference in course selection for students in the bottom 2, middle 2 and top 2 bands.  This will support SEF elements, Student Performance Measures, School Performance, and Curriculum.

What should I look for?

• Did students who performed in the top 2 bands in NAPLAN 9, enrol in appropriately challenging HSC courses (e.g. Advanced/Extension courses). If not, this may assist Teaching and Learning coaches to intervene before students choose their Stage 6 subjects to ensure they are being appropriately challenged.
• Did students who performed in the bottom 2 bands, enrol in easier courses? A school with an aspirational ethos may wish to encourage lower-performing students to stretch themselves and attempt more challenging courses for the HSC.
• Note that this report only includes assessable HSC courses, i.e. courses that lead to a HSC score. Non-assessable courses are not included. If the number of students in this report appears smaller than the number of students enrolled at the school, this may indicate that many students enrolled in non-assessable courses. This data may be included in a future version of this report.
• As this report uses HSC data, it only reports on students who have completed the HSC. It is not possible at this time to report on students who are still in Stage 6.
