Student-Level NAPLAN 9 Reading and Numeracy vs HSC
The Student-Level NAPLAN 9 Reading and Numeracy vs HSC report displays a scatter plot of the combined (average) student NAPLAN year 9 reading and numeracy scores and their HSC performance. Individual students, courses and KLA’s can be selected as can whole cohorts from across years.
How will this report benefit me?
This report can be used to determine whether students are maintaining, improving or regressing in terms of their strength of performance from NAPLAN 9 reading and numeracy to the HSC. High performing NAPLAN students in reading and numeracy would be expected to perform well on the HSC and thus the student’s dot would be expected to be within the top right area of the chart.
Schools can assess whether overall cohort progress is being made as an indicator of improvements in the teaching and learning practices within the school.

Note: Results for students sitting HSC courses in non-government schools or TAFE NSW sites will not appear as only DoE schools data appears in Scout for the HSC.

Student Reading & Numeracy NAPLAN Score Compared to Student HSC Scaled Score
- This scatterplot compares a student’s average NAPLAN 9 scores in Reading and Numeracy with their HSC course marks.
- The average NAPLAN 9 score is on the x-axis.
- The HSC course mark is on the y-axis.
- A dot falling in the top part of the chart indicates that the student performed better than expected in the HSC compared to their NAPLAN 9 average score.
- A dot falling in the bottom half of the chart indicates that the student performed worse than expected in the HSC compared to their NAPLAN 9 average score.
- A dot falling in the middle of the chart (at approximately 30 degrees from bottom left corner to top right corner) indicates the student performed as expected in the HSC compared to their NAPLAN 9 average score.
- Hover over any dot to view the student’s name, the year they sat the HSC, and their average NAPLAN and HSC scores.
- Slice by HSC Key Learning Area (KLA) or HSC Course to compare the student’s NAPLAN 9 performance to a specific KLA or HSC course.
Use the slicers to filter the data for further analysis:
- Cohort Enrolment Year –you must select a value in this slicer for the data to be meaningful
- Cohort Scholastic Year – you must select a value in this slicer for the data to be meaningful
- Cohort Student Group – This enables this report to be filtered by groups that have been created in the Custom Groups App. This is useful for grouping students by class.

This report allows schools to review students’ performance to determine whether changes to teaching practice are required to enhance the educational outcomes of students.
What should I look for?
- Student dots in the top half of the chart represent students improving on their NAPLAN performance in the HSC.
- Student dots near the middle of the chart represent students maintaining performance across NAPLAN and HSC.
- Student dots in the bottom half of the chart represent students performing better in NAPLAN than was reflected in their HSC performance.
