How will these report benefit me?

This report can be used by Executive Directors and Directors of public schools to determine whether schools are maintaining, improving or regressing in the average performance of students from NAPLAN in year 9 to HSC, as measured by ATAR. Schools with a high NAPLAN average score would be expected to perform well on the HSC and thus the scatter plot would be expected to fall within the top right quarter of the graph. Directors can select multiple years to assess whether overall cohort progress is being made as an indicator of improvements to the teaching and learning practices within the school

What does the NAPLAN 9 Reading and Numeracy vs ATAR Across Schools report provide?

This report presents information on:

School Average Reading and Numeracy NAPLAN Score by School Average ATAR

• This scatter chart compares a school cohort’s NAPLAN 9 results with the same cohort’s ATAR 3 years later.
• The average NAPLAN 9 score for Reading and Numeracy is on the X axis.
• The cohort’s average ATAR is on the Y axis.
• Note that the cohort is defined by the selections made in the Cohort Enrolment Year and Cohort Scholastic Year slicers. For example, if the Year 12, 2016 cohort is selected, this will include all students who were in Year 12 at each selected school in 2016. This will be compared against their NAPLAN 9 results, even if they completed NAPLAN 9 at a different school.
• Hover over the chart to view the average NAPLAN score, average ATAR and number of students for the school. The number of students is based on NAPLAN 9 so there may be a discrepancy with the number of students at the school in Year 12.

How can I use the NAPLAN 9 Reading and Numeracy vs ATAR Across Schools report to support principals in my network with their self-assessment?

This report allows review of school performance to evaluate if changes to teaching practice are required to enhance the educational outcomes of students.

Directors can identify schools that are performing well.  This may prompt a conversation with principals of high-performing schools to understand whether their practices can be used to support schools who may not be performing as well as expected.

What should I look for?

• School performance in the top right quarter of the chart represents high levels of NAPLAN and ATAR performance.
• School performance in the top left quarter represents schools that performed better than expected in the ATAR compared to their NAPLAN results.
• School performance in the bottom right quarter indicates schools that are performing well in NAPLAN but not translating that to high ATAR results.
• School performance in the bottom left quarter indicates schools that have achieved low to average scores in both NAPLAN and ATAR.
