General Learning Space Hub form the basic core of primary / secondary teaching and learning environments. This group of spaces is commonly used for teaching subjects which do not typically require specialist equipment or resources. Support Hub General Learning Spaces should reflect provision in mainstream, in size, provision of equipment, look and feel.
The requirements of every support class will be different depending on the student profile and varying needs of the students who enrol at the school. For this reason, it is important that the standard design for support learning areas is a flexible as possible, and customised by way of zones (including furniture, fit out and equipment (FF&E)) to suit the needs of the students attending the school. These requirements may change year on year as new students come and go. The FF&E should be designed to allow flexibility and change with relative ease if required.
The General Learning Space is an adaptable learning space that accommodates a teacher’s desk and sufficient student desks and chairs to enable all to be seated.
Storage space is dedicated to the storage of learning resources and equipment used within Home Bases. Storage spaces in Support Units should have capacity to store large and bulky items and equipment and should be provided as cabinetry deep enough to allow for wheelchairs and larger equipment. Storage should be easily accessible for both staff and students. Storage rooms should be provided only from general circulation, not from learning or spaces.
The Learning Commons Space is an adaptable learning space that can be accessed by 3 GLS. It accommodates personal bag storage, activities area and breakout spaces.
The Shared Practical Activities Area is a wet area that contains storage for creative materials, an art trough and bench area. The area supports two Home Bases and has durable floor and bench finishes which are easy to clean. A small student personal effects storage area is included in this space.
The Multipurpose space is a small special purpose learning space which is provided to support the Home Base Area. This room has a minimal number of desks and chairs for individuals and small groups. In a Support Unit this space might also be utilised as a sensory or therapy space.
This room is a private room with a small workstation and furniture for a small meeting of less than 4. The room can also provide a place for the storage of confidential records.
Staff WC are toilets are designated for the amenity of staff.
The Accessible WC is accessed directly from the Learning Commons and is for use by students. The Accessible WC should be complaint with the BCA and AS 1428.1.
An adult change facility provides amenity for students with high support needs and students who might require additional space or the assistance of carers. Access can be provided from the Learning Commons and/or movement corridor.
Male and Female ambulant toilets are provided from the learning commons for independent use by support unit students
The Support Unit Laundry is designated for the cleaning of clothes and linen. The location should promote dignity for students and a place to clean soiled clothing.
Outdoor Learning Commons adjacent to the Support Learning Hub may be desirable as an alternate, quieter recreation space.
