The Wood & Metal Technology Unit contains specialised spaces equipped for the learning and teaching of wood and metal subjects. The integrated layout enables a flow between the general learning spaces and the workshop for the processes of designing, making and appraising. The large shared workshop maximises the use of specialist equipment.
The Wood and Metal General Learning Space is an adaptable learning space that accommodates a teacher’s desk and sufficient student large tables and chairs to enable a class group to be seated. There is an independent work area for individuals and pairs.
The Wood & Metal Workshop is a hands-on teaching and learning space for wood and metal uses. There is a mix of wood and metal work benches for a class group and a Machine Zone and Finishing Area are provided. There is also a height adjustable fixed bench. Internal glazing provides good visual supervision to the Wood and Metal General Learning Spaces.
The Welding/Hot Metals Area is an exhaust ducted area used for the welding of hot metals projects. Heat Treatment/Welding Benches should be provided. A Welding Curtain should be used to partition the Hot Metals from surrounding areas. This room is predominantly for teacher use or students under supervision.
The Wood & Metal Materials Store Room is dedicated to the storage of metal, wood and finishing materials used in the Wood & Metal Workshop.
The Wood & Metal Project Store Room is dedicated to the storage of student projects completed in the Wood & Metal Workshop. A variety of deep shelving units should be provided.
The Gas Store Room is a well ventilated space dedicated to the storage of gas bottles and related equipment.
A fit for purpose space to house Laser and 3D printers.
The Outdoor Covered Workshop is a well-ventilated undercover space directly accessed from the wood and metal workshops.
A separate Dust Extraction space adjacent to Materials Workshop.
The Wood & Metal Project Store Room is dedicated to the storage of student projects completed in the Wood & Metal Workshop. A variety of deep shelving units should be provided.
The Staff Study is a place for staff to prepare class activities and to assess work. Adequate workstations should be provided to accommodate all staff. Storage for shared resources should be provided for all staff to access.
