About School Infrastructure
The School Infrastructure division within the NSW Department of Education is responsible for the planning, design, development, community use and ongoing maintenance and expansion of the state’s schools. We are currently delivering the largest infrastructure investment in public education in the history of NSW.

Our Infrastructure Pathways Program supports the NSW Department of Education Our Plan for NSW Public Education by providing meaningful post-school pathways, and develop and grow the workforce required to meets the needs of a growing population and support improved student outcomes.
Traineeship
There are seven positions available: Eveleigh x 4, Blacktown x 1 and Gateshead x 1
About the role
- Your first step along a career pathway with a future: study, learn and earn with the School Infrastructure division
- An opportunity for students studying a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice
- Unique program combines work-based experience, mentorship with NSW Department of Education in the high-demand infrastructure sector
As a trainee, you’ll work four days per week, working on real projects across School Infrastructure, and spend a day a week through TAFE NSW. You’ll work as part of a team in either facility management, resource sustainability or developing opportunities for the shared use of school sites.
About you
- You completed Year 12 at the end of 2024
- You are enrolled in or willing to enrol in a Certificate IV in Project management Practice at TAFE NSW to be completed before 30 June 2027
- You may be an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person
- You have excellent interpersonal skills, and are able to quickly analyse information, provide advice and have excellent attention to detail
- You have Australian Citizenship.

About the role
The School Infrastructure Cadetship pathwayprovides students studying a relevant diploma or bachelor’s degree on-the-job work experience. This is an exciting opportunity for young people looking to grow their career in the infrastructure sector.
As a Cadet Support Officer, you’ll play a pivotal role in contributing to the growth of the infrastructure sector while learning from industry leaders. During the program, you will have the opportunity to benefit from comprehensive work-based training, mentoring and development in an area that aligns to your chosen studies.
Cadets are being sought, who are currently studying:
- Community Engagement - 3 x positions at Eveleigh
- Computer Science - 2 x position at Eveleigh
- Property Planning - 1 x position at Eveleigh
- Project Management - 1 x Lismore, 1 x Forster, 2 x Gateshead, 1 x Blacktown, 1 x Eveleigh
This program allows you to work a minimum of 3 days a week and take unpaid study leave for the other two.
About you
- You are studying full-time in a Diploma (through TAFE NSW) or bachelor’s qualification which will be completed by 30 June 2027
- You are committed to working collaboratively, both across government and with our community partners
- You have proven experience of delivering results in a fast-paced environment, particularly through your excellent interpersonal skills
- You can quickly analyse information, provide advice and have excellent attention to detail
- You may be an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person

Asset Activations
As a trainee in the Asset Activations team you’ll be ensuring our schools are always a vital part of each community – even once the students and teachers have gone home. You’ll use your project management skills to track and inform decisions on design, use and partnership arrangements that maximise use of schools sites outside of learning hours, and help evaluate programs to achieve greater cost efficiency, use, and enhance student and community outcomes. As part of this team you’ll support the government Share Our Space program across NSW, ensuring all communities have access to a place to play and enjoy personal fitness and leisure building well-connected, authentic relationships to deliver innovative opportunities for students and families across all local government areas.
Asset Management
Blacktown, Eveleigh, Forster, Hunter/Central Coast and Lismore
The NSW Department of Education has Asset Management Regional Offices in 8 locations across the state. These teams are responsible for Facilities Maintenance and Minor and Major Project delivery. Each team is dedicated to ensuring the provision of quality services to our clients, our schools and work with a range of contractors to deliver our programs
We have opportunities for cadets in our 2025 intake in the five locations identified above, and traineeship opportunities at Blacktown, Eveleigh and Gateshead.
Blacktown
In Blacktown, as a cadet or trainee you'll support the work and services with preparation of reports and briefs, coordinating resources, maintaining project documentation and implementing and monitoring project plans, to ensure project outcomes are achieved on time, on budget, to quality standards and within agreed scope, in line with established agency project management methodology. You’ll help prepare and maintain project documentation for reporting, monitoring and evaluation purposes to ensure accessibility of quality information and contribute to the achievement of project outcomes, communicate with key stakeholders and coordinate working groups, committees and consultations to facilitate exchange of information and support project completion in line with project plans. In addition, you'll source, collate and compile data and information to identify emerging issues and track and report on project progress against established milestones and deliverables.
Eveleigh
When working with our Asset Delivery Team at Eveleigh as a cadet or trainee, you’ll be involved in the beginning-to-end of school projects: managing, scoping, tenders and delivering projects such as upgrades and additions to schools on big and small projects up to $4 million by working collaboratively across the organisation. The work is varied covering upgrade to renewal of school facilities, refurbishing teaching spaces and outdoor sporting facilities.
Hunter/Central Coast - Gateshead
In the Hunter/Central Coast, our Asset Management Regional Office provides a range of asset related services to over 290 public schools across our region. As a cadet or trainee, you’ll have up-close experience supporting these schools through facility maintenance, and the beginning-to-end experience of minor and major project delivery.
North Coast - Lismore and Forster
Our North Coast Asset Management Regional Office locations of Lismore and Forster are delivering new school buildings, major upgrades and maintenance strategies to ensure every school-aged child has access to high quality education facilities at their local public school. This unit covers over 270 school locations across a huge geographic areas and is responsible for capital works and maintenance for the portfolio in the region. As a cadet, you’ll be an integral part of the team assisting with all aspects of projects and their delivery for our schools. These tasks may include consulting with internal and external stakeholders to develop solutions to complex building and facilities management issues, developing and monitoring design documentation including technical specifications and developing and maintaining effective relationships with Principals, consultants and contractors.
Community Engagement
Our public schools are public assets, and as a Community Engagement cadet or Project Management trainee working in these teams, you help support the vital relationships we value with our school communities.
First Nations Engagement in School Infrastructure
As a cadet or trainee in our First Nations Engagement in School Infrastructure (FNESI) team you’ll use your community engagement (cadet) or project management (trainee) skills to support meaningful employment opportunities for First Nations people and businesses within Facilities Maintenance Contract, particularly through local and regional contractors that are geographically located on the traditional area/s of their tribal group (also known as 'on Country'). By embracing and celebrating the rich heritage of First Nations cultures and valuing the contributions of its people, this program seeks to promote equity, belonging and respect. The FNESI program supports a greater investment in the development of local skills and trades that align with the requirements of each community.
Communication Engagement Team
As a cadet in our Communication Engagement Team, you will work closely with project teams, school Principals, local community members and representative groups, and other key stakeholders to ensure we keep school communities and neighbouring residents informed throughout all stages of our projects.
Sustainability Team
Our Sustainability Team aims to embed sustainable thinking and action across the department. As a cadet (Community Engagement) and a trainee (Project Management) you will help the team accomplish developing and implementing policies, reporting, and state-wide sustainability programs that align with our Commitment to Sustainability. Additionally, you'll be part of a team that offers expert advice and guidance on climate and sustainability topics to a diverse range of internal stakeholders, including schools, education support, and asset management teams as well as collaborate with other government departments.
Computer Science
School Infrastructure is delivering new and upgraded school assets to meet growing demands and ensuring that every school-aged child has access to high quality education facilities at their local school.
Data Services Team
As a cadet in your Data Services team, you’ll be helping lead and manage a range of data ‘assets’ captured throughout the data asset lifecycle, from source system ingestion, data transformation, and the generation of reports and dashboards. You’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in data analysis, data engineering, data modelling, stakeholder engagement, and report development. The team is embarking on an exciting period of transformation. Leveraging architectures and modern data platforms, and exciting opportunity exists for a data-minded individual to learn from an experienced team, using best-in-class approaches to data management, and at the same time make a real-world impact to the education experience of thousands of young learners.
Strategic Infrastructure Analysis team
As a cadet in our Strategic Infrastructure Analysis team, you’ll help in shaping the future of NSW public education through analysis of demographic trends, identification of both short and long-term forecasts of student numbers, and building solutions to analyse infrastructure data to identify current and future needs across the school network. The team supports strategic decision-making, optimising asset utilisation, and informs short/medium and long-term capital planning for new schools and upgrades to ensure infrastructure investment aligns with population growth, educational demand, and government priorities—enabling the delivery of fit-for-purpose learning environments that meet the needs of students, schools, and communities now and into the future.
Property Planning
Through our Service Needs Analysis team, you will have a focus on planning to identifying suitable lands to meet the community need for schools led by future population increases in areas of regional, rural and metropolitan areas of NSW. As a cadet you will help prepare papers, presentations, research into applicable legislative requirements related to land history and environmental considerations, and general support for this small but dynamic team.
