The School Infrastructure Infrastructure Pathways Program supports the NSW Department of Education's Our Plan for Public Education by offering improved access, opportunities and choice across post-school pathways including university, training and work for all students.

The pathways available through the traineeship and cadetship provide a meaningful first-step into the infrastructure sector but with a clear and purposeful focus on school-based infrastructure.

Both pathways actively encourage participation by women and First Nations young people in order to redress the current imbalance in representation in this sector.

Hands-on experience and skill development

Our trainee and cadet pathways are an entry-point into School Infrastructure, the NSW Department of Education and working in government as a whole.

These pathways are designed to help you build the foundational technical and workplace skills to support your career development by providing hands-on experience in contributing to the planning, delivery, maintenance and community use of public schools across the state.

Trainees and cadets are employed within the department for two years working, where possible, in two different teams during that time for 12-months each.

Each pathway incorporates a focused learning plan ensuring trainees and cadets work towards clearly defined rotation goals, so at the end of the program they can demonstrate skills and experience that align to government graded capabilities.

Pathways to employment

School Infrastructure is committed to fostering talent and creating a strong pipeline of skilled professionals able to work in the growing sector of infrastructure.

Upon completing the two-year program, trainees and cadets should be well-positioned to apply for roles within School Infrastructure or explore other employment opportunities within the NSW Government.

However, as the NSW Department of Education these pathways also actively support ongoing learning.

Trainees receive one-day paid leave a week to attend their TAFE NSW course in Certificate IV in Project Management Practice.

Cadets can take leave without pay for up to two days a week to attend classes or sessions towards their Diploma or bachelor's qualification.

While most trainees and cadets will complete their formal study during their pathway program, their work-based learning with School Infrastructure continues throughout the two years.

Building on our benchmark programs

The Infrastructure Pathways Program builds on the successful NSW Government Infrastructure Traineeship Program (NSWITP) and the department's existing School Infrastructure Cadetship and Graduate programs.

Almost 500 young people have had the opportunity to start a career in infrastructure through the NSWITP and now work with the NSW Government or with private construction or agency enterprises.
