Workshop on the department’s ProtoSat unit.

Workshop abstract

Travel to space is expensive, but thanks to miniaturisation of technologies and advances in materials we can now hold a cubesat satellite in the palm of our hand. In this workshop, participants work through digital technology-based activities from the Department of Education’s ProtoSat unit, developed with input from experts from the space industry.

Learning objectives

Assemble and code digital technology to measure weather data (temperature and humidity) and save it (data-logging).

Curriculum alignment
iSTEM – Stage 5

ST5-6 – selects and safely uses a range of technologies in the development, evaluation, and presentation of solutions to STEM-based problems.

ST5-9 – collects, organises, and interprets data sets, using appropriate mathematical and statistical methods to inform and evaluate design decisions.

TE4-4DP – designs algorithms for digital solutions and implements them in a general-purpose programming language.

Computing Technology – Stage 5

CT5-OPL-01 – designs, produces and evaluates algorithms and implements them in a general-purpose and/or object-oriented programming language.

CT5-DAT-02 – acquires, represents, analyses and visualises simple and structured data.
