Artificial intelligence in education

New technology and practices are becoming a part of our everyday lives – including in our education system. Learn more about how we’re responding and supporting teachers and schools.

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that can simulate human intelligence to learn, reason and problem-solve.

Generative AI is a category of artificial intelligence. Generative AI generates new content such as text, images, audio, and video that resembles content humans produce.

Learners and educators in our system need to be prepared for a future where artificial intelligence (AI) is part of everyday life.

NSW led work across Australia to develop the Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools. The Framework seeks to guide the responsible and ethical use of generative AI tools in ways that benefit students, schools and society.

The Framework has guided the department’s approach to generative AI in public schools. The department is aware of its responsibility to support schools and staff to engage safely and productively with AI and generative AI technologies. We are developing and coordinating tools and guidance for schools to promote the safe and effective use of AI. In 2024, this will include:

  • providing teachers with state-wide professional learning

  • continuously reviewing generative AI tools to be used on departmental devices, while maintaining restrictions on new commercial arrangements involving generative AI

  • continuously reviewing generative AI features enabled by vendors via add-ins, which will include disabling add-ins where possible until such a review is complete

  • testing education specific generative AI solutions and opportunities

  • reviewing the operationalisation of the Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools, including assessing policy requirements.

An executive leadership group (AI ELG) has responsibility for the department’s responses to AI with accountability for implementing policy, guidance and solutions, for consulting and engaging stakeholders and for providing professional development and practical support to educators.
