Additional resources for support in times of crisis

Schools play a critical role in maintaining connection and engagement with students and families during periods of uncertainty and community unease. Below are some resources and supports that are available to schools.

Within the department

The Multicultural Education unit promotes intercultural understanding, anti-racism, social inclusion in schools, support for English language learners, students from refugee backgrounds and newly arrived students and resources and advice to counter religious intolerance.

  • Supporting refugee students webpages provide information about students from refugee backgrounds and available support.
  • The Refugee Student Counselling Support Team provides support for schools through advice, tailored professional learning and targeted support in complex cases.

  • Racism. No Way – a national anti-racism education website that is managed by the NSW Department of Education on behalf of all Australian schools.
  • Anti-racism Professional support – a range of professional learning opportunities in anti-racism, multicultural education and intercultural understanding are available for school staff, students and community.

EAL/D education webpages provide an overview of EAL/D learner support including delivery and funding.

  • Henry Parkes Equity Resource Centre has a large collection of materials to support schools. These include resources for trauma, resilience and wellbeing including specialist counsellor resources.

  • Engaging communities – information about family-school partnerships, examples of practice, research, resources and professional learning to promote positive community relations with parents from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Reconciliation in education – Narragunnawali supports schools and early learning services in Australia to develop environments that foster a higher level of knowledge and pride in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions.
  • Interpreting and translations webpages provide guidelines on how to use an interpreter for interviews, including information about funding for interpreting, and translations of important information and documents.
