English K–10 Syllabus (2012)
Requirements for planning a program of learning or a course at your school.
Each document sets out the key requirements for planning a program of learning for Stage 4 and Stage 5. The planners include a rationale, an outline of the purpose of the planner and an optional suggested collaborative structure. The text requirements are explained for each stage and there are tables provided to assist teachers and leaders of English to map and outline the way these requirements are currently being met. This assists in the identification of areas for refinement. The planner also includes a comprehensive program planner for both stages.
These documents set out the key requirements for planning a course at your school. They are organised beginning with Year 12 to support the planning process of backward mapping.

Support for controversial issues in English
The texts used in classrooms
Texts are used to support teaching and learning across a range of subjects from Kindergarten to Year 12.
When communicating with parents and carers about texts, the templates in the text selection notification may be used. These templates can be adapted to suit the school context.
The selection of texts used in schools should be considered in line with the expectations of, and relevance to, the curriculum and the Controversial issues in schools policy. The Controversial Issues in Schools Procedures, include a sample template that teachers can use for permissions where controversial issues may be addressed.
Texts in English
Texts are used across the curriculum from K–12. In English, the study of texts is essential in all stages and there are specific text requirements. In the English K–10 Syllabus (NESA 2022), there are specific text requirements for English K–2, English 3–6 and English 7–10. In Stage 6, each English course has its own text requirements. It is essential that teachers know and plan for the text requirements.
In Year 12 of Stage 6 English, there are English Stage 6 Prescriptions for the Year 12 modules. There are prescribed texts aligned to modules. These requirements are specific for each Stage 6 English course and are published as a PDF on the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) website.
Text requirements should be carefully planned and backward mapped to ensure all requirements are met across the stage of learning.
