Numeracy
Numeracy involves using mathematical ideas effectively to participate in daily life and make sense of the world. It incorporates the use of numerical, spatial, graphical, statistical and algebraic concepts and skills in a variety of contexts and involves the critical evaluation, interpretation, application and communication of mathematical information in a range of practical situations.
Numeracy is incorporated in the NSW Syllabuses for the Australian curriculum as a general capability alongside other key learning areas across the curriculum areas.
A series of evidence-based resources are available to support teachers to effectively teach numeracy in the classroom, including:
- lesson advice guides (K-6) and teaching advice guides (7-12)
- teaching strategies
- exploring patterns
- talk moves
- understanding units of measurement
- a set of flexible additive strategies resources including:
- combinations to 10
- 2 digit and 3 digit numbers and
- decimals
- a set of number knowledge resources looking at:
- multiplicative strategies and flexible multiplicative strategy resources looking at:
- strategies for sharing and forming groups.
- single digit, multi digit and rational numbers
- proportional thinking resources looking at
