About this report

The Student item analysis report shows how a student has performed against each NAPLAN item they were presented in Reading, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation and Numeracy. The report includes test item descriptions and difficulty details, mapped to NSW syllabus outcomes, learning progressions and teaching strategies.

Writing results are presented in the Student item analysis (writing) report.

How to use the report

Select the School, Assessment, Student and Domain. Optional slicers for Enrolment year, Scholastic year, Specific group type and Specific group may help further refine the list of student names.

The table contains a row for each item presented to the student in their tailored test. Click on any of the column headers to sort the data.

If no data is shown for a selected student and domain, the student may not have completed that assessment. Refer to the Summary of scores table in Student summary for more information.

Click the link icon to view links to:

• Teaching strategy – department resource to support teaching of the skills and content assessed.
• Curriculum – the Australian Curriculum content area. Since NAPLAN is national, the Australian Curriculum may vary from the NSW syllabuses used in all NSW schools.
• Exemplar – a sample item similar to the item presented to students

When opening this report by clicking the icon on the Student summary, the slicers will not show selections but a warning will appear confirming that the report has been populated using pre-selected values. Select 'Reset all slicers' to clear the preselection and select a new student.

What should I look for?

NAPLAN uses a tailored test design which means that tests automatically adapt to a student’s test performance and present questions that match the student’s achievement level. Exploring the targeted questions and their complexity provides more detailed information on student performance.

The report allows teachers to better understand the needs of individual students, including areas of strength and areas for development.

Select the 'Teaching strategy' link to find department resources to support the teaching of the skills and content assessed in each item.

Examples of analysis scenarios:

• Explore results by sorting the table. For example, sort by subdomain or focus area, syllabus code, learning progression or item descriptor.
• Consider how this provides additional information to support understanding of individual student needs:
  • What is assessed most frequently?
  • Is there a pattern to the student’s correct and incorrect answers?
  • What insights can be formed about the student's strengths and needs?
• Explore the complexity of items presented by looking for patterns in proficiency and difficulty levels. There may be an interaction with syllabus outcome, for example, a difficult item on a lower stage or an easier question mapped to a higher syllabus stage.
