Transition adviser training

A school transition adviser plays a crucial role in guiding students during their high school years as they prepare for life beyond the classroom.

Transition adviser training is available to principal nominated secondary and central school teachers, through an annual expression of interest process.

Schools considering supporting the needs of their students by establishing the role of transition adviser should read the Transition adviser guidelines.

Principals wishing to nominate a teacher for transition adviser training commit to the following 3 conditions:

  1. their capacity and commitment to allocate adequate time to facilitate the role for two years for no less than 0.4 FTE non-teaching time for a secondary school
  2. a willingness to establish or maintain and support a School to Work team; and
  3. a willingness to participate in on-going evaluation of the transition adviser role for two years.

Transition advisers actively work to engage and retain students. They encourage students to participate in career exploration, skill development, and planning for their future. Transition advisers:

  • work closely with individual students to create personalised programs for career and transition support.
  • assist students in identifying their interests, strengths, and aspirations, tailoring guidance to each student’s unique needs.
  • provide information about various career pathways, vocational education, and work opportunities.
  • help students to develop employability skills including collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, self-management, and cross-cultural understanding.
  • work with local community, industry, and government agencies to deliver innovative and engaging programs.
  • guide students in making informed decisions about their post-school options, whether it’s pursuing further education, entering the workforce, or exploring apprenticeships.

Transition advisers acknowledge that all NSW public school students have a right to an inclusive learning environment and to feel happy and safe at school.
