Novel voices – Year 10, Term 1
These resources have been designed for teachers in connection to the Year 10, Term 1 program 'Novel voices'.
The materials provide one way to approach conceptual programming to develop students' understanding of how the style of a text can represent larger ideas through genre. In this program, students engage with a novel to explore how authors use narrative conventions to represent ideas and shape meaning.
As they study the teacher-selected novel, students deepen their understanding of how elements of prose fiction and point of view can be used to influence a reader’s response to the text. Students will explore how characters in texts can be lifelike constructions with whom an audience can establish intellectual and emotional connections.
The program and associated resources are not intended to be taught exactly as is presented in their current format but should be adapted to suit students’ needs. The resource should be used with timeframes that are created by the teacher to meet the overall assessment schedules.
Two versions of the resource booklet have been provided. One version contains the full text of all resources and activities, including annotations of extracts from Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s novel 'Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe'. The other contains resources and activities, but only abbreviated descriptions of the novel’s extracts. The full text version of the resource booklet and the Core text booklet (containing all licensed extracts) are only available to staff from the NSW Department of Education.
