Exploring the speculative – Year 9, Term 4

These resources have been designed for use by teachers in connection to the Year 9, Term 4 program 'Exploring the speculative'.

The materials provide one way to approach conceptual programming to develop students' understanding of how the style of a text can represent larger ideas through genre. In this program, students will explore how the composers of speculative fiction use their texts to comment on real-world concerns.

Students will investigate speculative fiction, its evolution and how this can reflect changing values. They analyse and discuss the ways that composers of speculative fiction texts use and manipulate language to convey thematic messages in their texts. Students deepen their understanding of authorial intent and reflect on how reading enables them to understand wider universal issues.

The program and associated resources are not intended to be taught exactly as presented in their current format, but should be adapted to suit students’ needs. The resource should be used with timeframes that are created by the teacher to meet the overall assessment schedules.

The specific episodes from the Australian Children’s Television Foundation’s television show Crazy Fun Park that have been referred to in 'Sample learning program part 2 – Crazy Fun Park' can be accessed on Exploring the speculative – Crazy Fun Park (staff only). They have been licenced to the NSW Department of Education and are available to department staff only.
