Models of curriculum implementation

NESA syllabus implementation timelines have changed, providing teachers more time and flexibility to plan and prepare. This ensures effective and considered implementation to enhance the impact of the curriculum reform on student learning.

NESA released a NSW Curriculum Reform timeline in July 2023, detailing syllabus release and implementation.

The timeline consists of 3 steps:

  1. NESA syllabus consultation and release – draft syllabus documents are made available to the public and feedback is gathered from the diverse range of stakeholders in NSW. Writers then refine the draft syllabus documents based on the feedback.
  2. Planning and preparation in schools – the syllabus is approved by the Minister and launched. Teachers can access the new syllabus and begin preparation for teaching.
  3. Implemented in schools – the syllabus is taught in schools.

Support for government schools

The department provides targeted support for government schools throughout the curriculum implementation process. This support is centred around 3 key phases:

  1. Engage – explore aspects of the new syllabus to identify and plan for changes required for effective curriculum implementation.
  2. Enact – teach, assess, and report using the new syllabus, and evaluate to refine new practices and systems.
  3. Embed – strengthen and scale to ensure sustainable practices and systems.

These phases are designed to align with the broader steps of the Curriculum Reform. They provide schools with the guidance and resources needed at each stage of the transition to the new syllabus.
