Transport for NSW will assess your school site to determine the eligibility for a School Crossing Supervisor.

School Principals can make a request to Transport for NSW using their online form.

Share this with your school community

When a School Crossing Supervisor is absent schools should:

Notify the School Crossing Supervisor's absence to:

• the department's Health and Safety Directorate either online via the Incident Report and Support Hotline or by calling 1800 811 523
• Transport for NSW via email: scscentral@transport.nsw.gov.au or phone 1800 427 677, if they haven't already notified your school.

Consider how the school will manage student safety during this time.

• If your school has a children’s pedestrian crossing, ensure the orange flags are displayed during morning and afternoon school zone times.
• Students requiring assistance to cross the road can be supported by an adult volunteer (details in question below).

Inform parents, carers, teachers and students of the absent SCS and changed conditions.

Ask parents and carers to escort their children to and from school during this period.

Provide road safety advice to remind them:

• that road safety is a shared responsibility
• children and young people are vulnerable road users
• of the key road safety messages for primary and high school students
• about student safe walking behaviours

Educate students about being a safe road user and any changed procedures

Document all actions.

Please be aware, school staff/parents/carers or any other person are NOT authorised to carry out the duties of the School Crossing Supervisor (SCS). They must NOT use the STOP children crossing bat or the Transport for NSW uniform.

Only three categories of people are legally permitted to stop road traffic in NSW. These include:

• NSW police officers
• SafeWork NSW authorised traffic controllers with a traffic control work training card
• TfNSW school crossing supervisors.

Any volunteer (school staff/parents/carers or any other person) are NOT authorised to carry out the duties of the School Crossing Supervisor (SCS). They must not use the STOP children crossing bat or the Transport for NSW uniform.

Students requiring assistance in crossing a road can be supported by an adult volunteer as follows:

1. Have the volunteer wear a high-visibility vest.
2. Choose a safe place to cross the road.
3. Identify a reasonable and manageable number of students to cross together as a group, that has the least impact on traffic flow. Students remaining on the footpath until the volunteer returns to collect them should be told where to wait safely.
4. Stop, look, listen and think before crossing the road together as a group. The volunteer should see the students safely on their way, then wait for a safe opportunity to cross the road and return to the waiting students.
5. Repeat the above steps until all students have safely crossed.

Where possible, volunteers should hold the hands of young children (up to eight years of age).

Please be aware, school staff/parents/carers or any other person is not authorised to carry out the duties of the School Crossing Supervisor (SCS).

Students requiring assistance to cross the road can be supported by an adult volunteer (details in the question above).

• duty of care and road safety
• exiting and entering the school grounds

Inform parents, carers, teachers:

• that road safety is a shared responsibility
• children and young people are vulnerable road users
• of the key road safety messages for primary and high school students
• about student safe walking behaviours

Educate students about being a safe road user and any changed procedures

Notify:

• the department's Health and Safety Directorate about the potential risk of harm and/or injury to your students, either online via the Incident Report and Support Hotline or by calling 1800 811 523
• Local government council for support in creating a safer traffic environment around the school. Find out who can assist with road safety on and around schools.

Document all actions.

Contact your Road Safety Education Officer to further guide you and your staff in developing localised:

• teaching and learning activities about safe road behaviours
• parent messages and a communication plan
• network support from both within and outside the department
• documentation procedures.
