Careers in Renewable Energy

The NSW Government aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. This goal is creating new jobs in building renewable energy sources, storage systems, and power lines throughout the state. To support this, skilled workers are needed in areas like energy, construction, and manufacturing.

NSW action on climate change to reach net zero emissions by 2050

This is a great time to consider a career in renewable energy. The NSW Department of Education is part of a whole-of-government effort to implement the NSW Government Net Zero Plan which, together with the Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, will create many thousands of new jobs, with the majority expected to be across regional NSW.

Training options

Micro skills

TAFE NSW offers a range of short courses, also referred to as ‘micro skills’, related to renewable energy. Micro skills are developed in partnership with industry and government, available online and on demand. They are suitable as an introduction, and for individuals looking to transition or upskill. Micro skills on offer in renewable energy include renewable energy generation, among others.

Nationally recognised qualifications

TAFE NSW and other registered training organisations offer nationally recognised qualifications at levels ranging from a statement of attainment, certificate, to diploma and undergraduate in renewable energy. There are also the more traditional qualifications. like those related to becoming an electrician and metal trades worker, which will be critical to building and maintaining the renewable energy infrastructure of the future.

Careers for Net Zero

To increase awareness of careers that will help to build the clean economy and help achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2050, the Clean Energy Council and Energy Efficiency has developed the Careers for Net Zero website. It includes a Clean Economy Career Explorer, which, based on your selected field of interest and level of qualification will list careers that you can explore further.
