Summary

The evaluation aimed to find out how well the Cadetship and Intern Programs were implemented and the initial impact they had on participants. The Cadetship and Intern Programs were part of the NSW Government's Great Teaching, Inspired Learning (GTIL) initiatives designed to attract high achieving students into the teaching profession and improve the quality of teaching in NSW schools in areas of need such as mathematics, science and special education. The methods included surveys and interviews with program participants and stakeholders, review of program documents and analysis of administrative data. Overall, these GTIL initiatives have been a positive experience for participants and schools with high take-up rates and 90% retention rates for both programs. Suggested improvements were better communication about the program to prospective participants and clarifying the expectations, roles and responsibilities of cadets, interns and host schools.
