Stage 3, mathematics, Year A – Unit 17

This 2-week unit develops the big idea that multiplicative thinking involves flexible use of multiplication and division concepts, strategies and representations.

Syllabus

Syllabus outcomes from Mathematics K–10 Syllabus (2022) © NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) for and on behalf of the Crown in right of the State of New South Wales, 2024.

Students are provided opportunities to:

  • select and apply appropriate strategies to solve multiplication and division problems
  • estimate and measure areas of rectangles and composite shapes using square centimetres and square metres
  • recognise the relationship between the dimensions of a prism and its volume to calculate volumes in cubic centimetres and cubic metres.

Multiplicative relations A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-MR-01

  • Determine products and factors
  • Use partitioning and place value to multiply 2-, 3- and 4-digit numbers by one-digit numbers
  • Use estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of answers to calculations

Multiplicative relations B – MAO-WM-01, MA3-MR-01

Select and apply strategies to solve problems involving multiplication and division with whole numbers

Geometric measure A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-GM-02

Length: Measure lengths to find perimeters

Two-dimensional spatial structure A – MAO-WM-01, MA3-2DS-02

Area: Calculate the areas of rectangles using familiar metric units

Two-dimensional spatial structure B – MAO-WM-01, MA3-2DS-02

Area: Find the area of composite figures

Three-dimensional spatial structure B – MAO-WM-01, MA3-3DS-02

  • Volume: Use cubic metres for measurement of volume
  • Volume: Recognise the multiplicative structure for finding volume
