English EAL/D

Support to help you plan, program and assess the English EAL/D course.

The English EAL/D 11–12 Syllabus (2024) is tailored for students learning English as an additional language or dialect, including those whose first language is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Languages. It aims to enhance language knowledge and skills while fostering students' intellectual, social, and emotional development. The course helps students understand how meaning is constructed and conveyed, allowing them to engage critically with various English texts from diverse cultural backgrounds.

In the English EAL/D 11–12 Syllabus (2024), students refine their speaking and listening skills and cultivate critical thinking and intercultural understandings through explicit English language instruction. They explore a wide range of texts, including academic and multimodal materials, which reflect their diverse backgrounds and experiences. The course focuses on the development of English proficiency and deepens student appreciation of the rich histories and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, ultimately preparing them to confidently interact within the multicultural landscape of Australian society.

The English EAL/D 11–12 Syllabus (2024) recognises the critical importance of providing students learning English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) with opportunities to develop and refine speaking and listening skills, collaborative and critical thinking skills and intercultural understandings.

English EAL/D 11–12 Syllabus (2024)

The new English EAL/D 11–12 Syllabus (2024) is to be implemented from 2026, with planning beginning in 2025. The syllabus will be taught to Year 11 from Term 1, 2026. Schools are to begin teaching Year 12 in Term 4, 2026. The first HSC examination for English EAL/D 11–12 Syllabus (2024) is in 2027.

Sample programs and resources for the English EAL/D 11–12 Syllabus (2024) are currently in development. These samples will include teaching and learning programs, resources, sample assessments and annotated student work samples for the Year 11 'Reading to write: Transition to English EAL/D' focus area and the Year 12 'Language, identity and culture' focus area.

English EAL/D Stage 6 Syllabus (2017)

The English EAL/D Stage 6 Syllabus (2017) is to be taught until implementation of the new English EAL/D 11–12 Syllabus (2024) is implemented from 2026.
