The weather was perfect for Ride2School Day, as 60 students from Kindergarten to Year 6 kick-started the morning with a healthy dose of exercise and discovered the joy of riding to school.

In preparation for the ride, students, parents, teachers and members of the Western Sydney Cycling Network met bright and early at the Warrimoo General Store, to ensure all helmets were fitted correctly and to perform bike safety checks.

Students were then organised into smaller groups and with the support of supervising adults, the riders started off on the journey to school.

Riding up the hills required a little extra pedal power, but students enthusiastically waved at local residents as they safely navigated the Warrimoo footpaths in single file.

Upon arriving at school, bike safety remained the focus for the day with members of the Western Sydney Cycling Network joining the students on the oval to share bike safety reminders such as:

• riding to the left on footpaths
  
• giving way to pedestrians on footpaths
• watching out for cars entering or leaving driveways.

It was a fabulous morning, celebrating active travel with the entire school community working together to reduce traffic, promote physical activity and learn about being a safe rider.

The 2021 Ride2School Day was so successful, that the students are already counting down the days to next year’s event. It has also encouraged those students who are old enough and have the skills to ride to and from school more often.
