Purpose

Effective writing: The evidence explores the complexity of writing and discusses the important components that must be taught for effective writing instruction. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the current research behind teaching writing effectively and this will inform a range of effective classroom practices for writing instruction.

Who should participate?

Kindergarten to Year 2 teachers and teachers of emergent writers in Years 3 to 6.

Content

This online course includes five modules:

• Module 1: Introduction to writing
  
• Module 2: The cognitive demands involved in writing
• Module 3: Evidence base for understanding writing
• Module 4: Transcription skills
  
• Module 5: Composition skills
  

Completing this course will help you to:

• develop and deepen your knowledge of evidence-based research on writing
• understand how evidence-based research can influence how writing is taught and assessed
• explore the important relationship between reading and writing and the implications for teaching
  
• understand the critical writing components required for developing skilled and strong writers.

This is the first course in a professional learning suite providing teachers of emergent writers with opportunities to develop and refine their effective classroom practices for explicit writing instruction.
