Multiplicative strategies: blended learning
Purpose
This two-day professional learning focuses on understanding the development of multiplicative thinking and practical ideas for classroom application.
It is designed to help teachers understand where multiplicative strategies are referenced in NSW syllabuses, how the numeracy learning progression provides fine grain detail on the development of multiplicative strategies and plan for differentiated teaching across the curriculum considering student learning needs.
Who should participate?
Kindergarten to Year 6 teachers and Year 7 and 8 mathematics teachers.
Mode of delivery
Blended learning - a combination of self-paced modules and facilitator-led, live sessions via Microsoft Teams.
Content
Participants will understand pedagogies that develop student confidence in using flexible strategies for multiplication and division and consider classroom applications.
- Day 1: Participants investigate where multiplicative strategies are referenced throughout NSW K-10 Mathematics syllabus, unpack research regarding student development of multiplicative thinking including exploring common misconceptions and develop effective pedagogies and diagnostic tasks to support the development of multiplicative strategies.
- Day 2: Participants consider the significance of mathematical vocabulary to support student understanding of multiplicative thinking and develop an understanding of the role of talk and effective questioning through examination of a repertoire of talk routines for formative assessment and programming.
