The Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus (2022) replaces the existing Japanese K–10 Syllabus (2017) from 2024.
In 2024, implementation of the Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus (2022) commenced in schools, with:
- 7–10 mandatory 100-hour courses
- new 100 and 200-hour elective courses.

Stage 4
This 10-week (25-hour) unit introduces students to Japanese festivals and events. Students will develop the language skills and intercultural capability to say what they want to do and make suggestions, with reasons, using verbs and adjectives.

Stage 5
This 10-week (25-hour) unit introduces students to travelling through Japan. Students will develop language skills and intercultural capability related to travel in and around Japan, including places of interest, experiences, travel etiquette, accommodation and making comparisons to recommend best options.

Nihongo Tanken Centre resources
The Nihongo Tanken Centre has designed activity packages, linked to syllabus outcomes, which can be incorporated into existing units of work or be used as stand-alone activities.
- Japan! (DOCX 2.13 MB) – this activity package introduces students to the culture of Japan through a series of stunning images. It includes a video, a list of photos and an interactive worksheet. Suitable for Stages 3 and 4, to prompt discussion as students start learning Japanese.
- Japanese house (DOCX 620 KB) – learn about features of the Japanese home, with 2 short videos, vocabulary and online interactive activities. Designed for Stage 4 students.
- Making onigiri (DOCX 584 KB) – learn how to make these delicious Japanese rice ball treats, with an instructional video (with script), shopping list, vocabulary and online interactive activities. Designed for Stage 4 students as part of a unit on eating in Japan.
- Yōkai booklet (DOCX 4.07 MB) and Yōkai teacher information (DOCX 1 MB) – explore yōkai (mythical creatures) from Japanese folklore through videos, audio files and a wide range of activities. There is also a bonus activity – yōkai card game. Designed for Stage 4 students.
