The Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus (2022) replaces the existing French K– 10 Syllabus (2018) from 2024.

In 2024, implementation of the Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus (2022) commenced in schools, with:

  • 7–10 mandatory 100-hour courses
  • new 100 and 200-hour elective courses.

The Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus (2022) is to be implemented from 2024.

2024 – Start teaching new syllabus for:

  • Schools with a K–6 language program
  • Mandatory 100 hours of a Language in Years 7–10

Students who commenced a 100-hour or 200-hour elective course in 2023 may continue to study that course in 2024.

Stage 4

This 10-week (25-hour) unit introduces students to ways of describing their home and local area. Students will develop language skills and intercultural capability related to describing where they live, where places are located and how to get there.

Stage 5

This 10-week (25-hour) unit explores popular culture, sport and hobby choices of young people around the world. Students will learn to exchange information about their leisure activities using the past and present tense, including the frequency of the activity. Students will develop the language skills to express preferences and justify their opinions about activities, popular culture and lifestyle choices. Students will learn about language choices and develop intercultural capability to make plans and compare seasonal hobbies and recreational activities in francophone countries.

Support for French K–10 Syllabus (2018)

The French K–10 Syllabus (2018) was developed using the Languages K–10 Framework. As all K-10 language syllabuses (2017 and later) are underpinned by this framework, teachers should view resources across all languages to access a broader range of sample scope and sequences, unit starters and assessment tasks.
