Unit 1 – Context
Students will identify how their context is represented in various texts. They will make connections between characters, events and their own experiences. Students will communicate their understanding through drawing and talking.

Unit 2 – Narrative
Students will explore narrative features. They will innovate from mentor and supporting texts to create a story with a beginning, middle and end. Students will share their stories using imaginative language.

Unit 3 – Character
Students will explore a range of characters in the mentor and supporting texts. They will identify character features and share their feelings towards characters and stories. Students will create their own character by drawing, talking and writing.

Unit 4 – Imagery, symbol and connotation
Students will explore the textual concept of imagery, symbol and connotation. They will understand how authors use wordplay, such as nonsense words, silly sentences and onomatopoeia to enhance enjoyment in texts. Students will use their knowledge of nouns and verbs to create their own silly sentences.

Unit 5 – Perspective and argument
Students revisit concepts explored throughout the term, including the beginning, middle and end of narratives, and identifying the main character in texts. Students will play with words and consider simple descriptions to express their preferences for texts and characters.
